The Circle of Fifths is a fundamental layout of music theory. It illustrates how the twelve tones of the chromatic scale relate to each other through the interval of a perfect fifth.
Visual Chord Geometry
By moving clockwise around the circle, note pitches increase by perfect fifths (7 semitones). Moving counterclockwise increases them by perfect fourths (5 semitones):
- Inner Circle: Minor Key designations (A, E, B, F#, C#...).
- Outer Circle: Major Key designations (C, G, D, A, E...).
- Close Neighbors: Keys that sit side-by-side share all but one note in their scales, making modulations between them sound extremely melodic.
