Harmonic mixing allows DJs to transition between tracks without creating key clashes. When two tracks are in compatible keys, their vocals, basslines, and melodies blend seamlessly. The Open Key Wheel simplifies musical keys into a 1 to 12 clock-system designation:
- Minor Scales (m): Denominated as 1m through 12m. Most house and techno tracks utilize minor keys.
- Major Scales (d): Denominated as 1d through 12d. Gives a happier, uplifting emotional status.
- The +/- 1 Rule: From any selection, you can move 1 step clockwise (fifth), 1 step counter-clockwise (fourth), or swap scales (m ↔ d) of the same digit.
- Energy Modulations: Moving +2 steps (e.g. 8m to 10m) pitches the key signature up a whole step which acts as an acoustic energy lift on the dancefloor.
